MSR PocketRocket Camp Stove Review
I already own a great MSR stove, the WhisperLite Internationale, but recently I have been doing more on-trail camping than actual expedition type treks, so I decided to find something that would be efficient and convenient for the shorter trips. My choice was the $35-$40 (USD) MSR PocketRocket. This stove uses the MSR IsopPro fuel canisters, which is an 80/20 mix of isobutane and propane, with a choice of either 4 or 8 fl. oz. Although these canisters take up a little space in your pack, they make up for their bulkiness in performance.
In camp, this lightweight and compact stove performs great! I have been out with it for a total of 8 days since I bought it this year, and I definitely have found its advantages, compared to the relatively high maintenance of the WhisperLite Int’l.
Something that was important to me when deciding on my purchase was the adjustable flame… this baby can go from ‘torch’ to ’simmer’, or anywhere in between. The so-called simmer setting sounds a bit like a shuttle takeoff (hence the name PocketRocket!), but quickly brings a 1 liter pot of water to boil in about 3 minutes (in my experience).
The specs are impressive as well:
- Weighs 3 oz / 85 g
- 60 minute burn time per 8 oz canister
- Boils 16-18 liters per 8 oz canister
The wind is typically not an issue with this stove, but during a 60 mile per hour wind storm, I did have to do my cooking under the cover of my tent’s vestibule… which is to be expected in such severe weather.
The adjustable burner is convenient for most tasks, from heating tortillas to cooking soups or boiling water for early morning coffee. The PocketRocket also comes with a compact and rugged carrying case that fits perfectly in my cookware set. Overall, I have plenty of praise for this simple and inexpensive product!
I have one that I bring out on trails too (not the hardcore stuff), and i’ve never had an issue with it! Simple and efficient product.
