China’s Utopia – Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve
High in the mountains of China, there exists a land of seemingly mystical proportions. The Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve lies in the Sichuan Province. The “valley of nine villages” (Jiuzhaigou) contains arguably the most beautiful and remarkable landscapes mankind has ever laid eyes on.
The approximately 80 kilometer long valley winds through a a myriad of glistening blue lakes, misting waterfalls, lush forests of evergreen (including bamboo), and Tibetan villages. This area is also home to various rare plants and animals, including the giant panda. Soon after being discovered by loggers in the 1970’s, China realized they had a ‘national gem’, and quickly placed it under special protection. The United Nations put it on its Natural Heritage List in 1992.

Peacock Lake
Of the 118 lakes, some of the most famous include descriptive names such as Long Lake, Grass Lake, Five Flower Lake, and Sleeping Dragon Lake. Interestingly, the original names in Tibetan use the word “Sea” instead of “Lake” because these magical waters were as close to the sea as the original inhabitants ever came. The brilliant colors of the lakes are caused by a high concentration of calcium carbonate, or travertine. Check out this striking collection of photos of Jiuzhaiguo at National Geographic.
In addition to the breathtaking scenery, Jiuzhaigou is teeming with rare plants and amazing wildlife. Here, in the alluring landscape of the valley, exist literally over 2000 unique varieties of flora and over 140 species of birds and mammals.
Although China has made this into one of its biggest tourist attractions, the numerous buses will still stop to allow the passengers to stroll at their own pace through various areas. It is rare, but not uncommon, to see the giant panda resting in a perch high above the forest floor. Being the protector and home of such a distinguished resident, it is obvious that there is something both magical and comforting about Jiuzhaigou and its shimmering emerald lakes.

Wow those pics were amazing. It sounds and looks like a ‘fairy tale’ land. I would love to get out there and take some of my own photos!
Yep, haven’t been there myself, but its been on my list for awhile. I think another rare species in the Jiuzhaigou area is the Golden Monkey (among others as I hear).
Just been avoiding China for some reason
I know some people over in the Western world avoid China for a number of reasons, but as long as you’re not government or military affiliated, it’s pretty safe and this stop may be worth it!
I fully agree with you Phillip. One who walks a straight path need not look over shoulder.
ik vind dit het mooiste plek ter weereld ik hoop dat ik het ooit ook echt zie!!
Not sure if the Chinese gov’t allows weddings there, but it would definitely be a great spot for it! Be sure to pass along the pics if you do visit!
